Active Minds, Inc. is the nation's only non-profit organization dedicated to utilizing the student voice to raise mental health awareness on college campuses. Headquartered in Washington, DC, the organization works with students, administrators, and mental health agencies to bring educational programming through campus-based chapters to college students nationwide.

Active Minds, Inc. is seeking an energetic self-starter to serve as Deputy Director to manage the DC office. The Deputy Director will work hand-in-hand with the Executive Director and will manage staff, HR, and bookkeeping responsibilities, and assist with development and related duties as needed. The purpose of this role is to support the executive director in the development and implementation of the organization's strategic plans and policies, and to provide leadership and direction to the Active Minds, Inc. staff.

The Deputy Director:

  • Is fully delegated authority to act on behalf of the Executive Director in her absence;
  • Provides leadership and direction for staff, setting an effective agenda and ensuring performance goals are met and set;
  • Serves as a mentor, coach and guide to staff;
  • Represents the organization to the public, key stakeholders and partners;
  • Provides guidance, as requested by the Executive Director, for fundraising and donor management, business development and partnership activities;
  • Provides guidance, as requested by the Executive Director, for program activities including outreach, volunteer coordination and partnerships development, as well as marketing, media relations, public relations and issues management activities;
  • Other duties as requested by the Executive Director.

Active Minds is a nonprofit organization with a small staff who all work very hard and feel very passionately about what they do. This is a full-time position with benefits.  Deputy Director reports directly to the Executive Director, and has management responsibilities over the Program Director and Chapter Coordinators.

Additional Qualifications:

Education and Training Required: Bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred

Experience Required: Minimum four years of management experience required. Experience in mental health, suicide prevention, young nonprofit development, or adolescent issues highly preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Creative 'out of the box' thinking and strategizing a must
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills necessary
  • Must be able to prioritize, be dependable and manage a heavy workload
  • Needs to be flexible, respectful, patient and an enthusiastic team player
  • Should be able to adapt easily to constantly changing situations, be creative and able to produce prompt and effective results
  • Must be comfortable representing the organization and speaking publicly on behalf of the organization in a professional manner
  • Ability to handle sensitive information discreetly and maintain confidentiality
  • Flexible schedule; able to work weekends and evenings as needed
  • Ability to work well independently and as an integral member of the Active Minds team
  • Computer proficiency is required, including knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Explorer/Mozilla.  Expertise in IT and other computer troubleshooting preferred

Active Minds, Inc. is seeking energetic, self-motivated individuals for several unpaid internships during the 2011 spring semester and summer (Jan-May, May-August).  Interns will have the ability to work closely with the staff as they help brainstorm and implement programs and educational content for the organization.

Specific opportunities are available to those who are skilled and interested in graphic design, communications, and technology.  Priority is giving to current or former members of Active Minds chapters.

Qualifications:  Experience or interest in mental health, suicide prevention, development of nonprofits, or adolescent issues a plus.
