Margaret Bertram grew up in several small towns in central
Illinois where everyone knew each other's business. She became a master
at projecting confidence, maturity, and success while hiding her thoughts and
feelings inside. Margaret's perfectionism and anxiety struggles began in
high school and continued through college where she struggled with shame
associated with discovering her lesbian identity, major depression, obsessive
compulsive disorder, and anorexia nervosa. Since her recovery, Margaret
has navigated a path toward a more positive, integrated, and balanced
life. She is a powerful speaker who engages audiences with her sincerity,
humor, and remarkable intellect. Margaret is currently Assistant Director
of Residence Life at Bard College in New York.
Carolyn Latkovich from Active Minds at Moravian College says:
"I am dedicated to spreading the word about
important topics such as suicide awareness because I lost a close friend to
suicide in high school... Active Minds provides an arena
for college students to voice their opinions about mental health, share their personal experiences,
and learn more about a subject that is otherwise ignored."
