When Alison's brother Brian died by suicide during her
freshman year of college in 2000, she decided to take action. Alison founded and is now
the Executive Director of a college mental health advocacy organization called
Active Minds. Over the last 8 years since the nonprofit was formed, Active Minds has grown to reach
over 350 campuses across the country, host a variety of award winning
programs, and is the home to the Active Minds Speakers Bureau. Alison's keynote
program educates, impacts, and inspires. She speaks from the perspective of a
survivor of family suicide, leader of a large nonprofit organization, and an
advocate for erasing the stigma surrounding mental health.
Topics: Suicide, making a difference, supporting a friend or
family member, leading change, the making of Active Minds, the impact of
language, grief and loss
Nicole Teitelbaum from Active Minds at Smith College says:
"As a survivor, leading Active Minds has proved to be my best means of recovery. By encouraging others to reach out and get the help they need, I am reminded each and every day the importance of taking care of myself."
