Active Minds

Wendy's Testimonial

Wendy Guillen from Active Minds at Florida International University says:

wendy_guillen_fiu "During my transfer orientation at Florida International University, I met the president of the newly established chapter of Active Minds and learned about its contribution to mental health on campus. Eager to join this cause, I spent my first year at Florida International University (FIU) as vice-president of Active Minds and learned the responsibilities and roles of being a true advocate. I learned how to stand for something that I believe in and its importance. I learned to stand for something that truly matters.

Everyone knows someone who is affected by a mental health disorder; they may have one themselves or know someone that does. This organization is here to make a difference, to try to fight against stigma, and to hopefully save someone from committing suicide. Every day that we spend advocating is a day closer to helping or saving someone's life, even if it is just one person at a time.

Throughout this past school year (2009-2010) I saw the impact Active Minds can have and what we as a group can accomplish. Active Minds is not just any organization, but an organization that puts effort into spreading awareness about mental health and mental illnesses such as depression and eating disorders. What started out with just ten people has grown to be one of the largest, most well-known organizations at FIU. I believe that Active Minds will only continue to shine and grow to its full potential on our campus."

"Active Minds has given me a feeling of control over how I view myself and has instilled within me the belief that the silence surrounding the stigma of mental illness can be broken. It has made me more comfortable talking about my own experiences and I can only hope that it can do the same for others."
