POSITION SUMMARY:

The Development Manager will be a key player in Active Minds’ growing development program, helping to bring both structure and imagination to individual, online, and special event fundraising and appeals. This individual will manage Active Minds’ broad-based donor fundraising program, oversee annual fund strategy development and implementation, and ensure that development operations are conducted efficiently and with excellence. 

The Development Manager will report to the Chief Development and Marketing Officer (CDMO), in addition to collaborating with other staff to promote an organizational culture of philanthropy.

KEY RESULTS

Individual Fundraising and Donor Relations (60%)

  • Cultivate, renew, upgrade, and steward Active Minds’ annual broad-base donors through a one-to-many approach, exceeding $500,000 in annual revenue.
  • Set annual fund strategy and implement, serving as primary writer for direct mail and email solicitations and cultivation communications.
  • Support planning and execution of cultivation events, ranging from parlor receptions through Active Minds’ twice-annual Casino Nights (DC and NYC), exceeding $400,000 in annual revenue.
  • Assist program team in supporting chapter fundraising, including preparation of materials for chapter fundraising campaigns.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for all third-party events, including peer-to-peer fundraisers, providing guidelines and support to partners as needed.

Managing Development Operations and Donor Stewardship (20%)

  • Co-manage Active Minds’ Special Projects Assistant and Development Intern(s), focused on development operations tasks including daily data entry, batch updates to CRM, and ensuring timely acknowledgement of gifts and appropriate stewardship of donors.
  • Creatively design and update Active Minds’ donor stewardship plan with the CDMO to provide new and meaningful ways to connect donors, and foster a sense of community.
  • Ensure Active Minds maintains a high level of operations, stewardship, and database integrity by documenting and overseeing data entry processes, and recommending policy improvement. 

Grant Writing & Foundation Relations (10%)

  • Participate in grant writing for small & mid-level national, regional and local foundation funders.
  • Serve as project manager for Active Minds’ foundation relations program, from prospecting and research; to ensuring timely application readiness; to CRM tracking of grant and report deadlines and deliverables for all grants awarded, liaising with staff to collect necessary data. 

Other Tasks (10%)

  • Collaborate with the CDMO to devise and update development strategy, updating the existing development plan to accomplish Active Minds’ strategic growth goals.
  • Support CDMO in the research and design of moves management plans for all individual and corporate donors.
  • Represent Active Minds at external events by tabling, networking, and prospecting potential new supporters and donors.

  • Born project manager with a knack for breaking ideas into deliverable tasks and tracking toward their timely completion.
  • Accustomed to working on multiple projects with different deadlines simultaneously.
  • Dynamic, professional, and poised brand ambassador for Active Minds.
  • Natural people person who appreciates that everyone has an important story to tell.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and enthusiastically in person, over the phone, and in writing with donors and with fellow staff members.
  • Stickler for details and quality.
  • Self-starter with a positive attitude who enjoys working proactively and thinking creatively
  • Advocate for social entrepreneurship and a believer in young people making an impact

We’re looking for:

  • 3-5 years of nonprofit development experience
  • Knowledge of and experience in directing broad-based fundraising strategies, including direct mail, email and online fundraising efforts
  • Fully digital-literate, including Microsoft and Google products, social media, and online meeting tools;
  • Experience with CRM systems (ex. Charity Engine, Salesforce) and other databases a plus.
