Calling All Student Mental Health Advocates

Active Minds
Active Minds

For years, mental health has been a growing issue among students. Even before the pandemic, research showed a rise in mental health issues among students over the past decade. And among BIPOC students this increase was even more pronounced. Experts and research predict that mental health challenges will continue to rise this fall, and will almost certainly be exacerbated for BIPOC students who are disproportionately harmed by the pandemic, police violence, and racial discrimination. What’s more, these students are less likely to receive mental health support than white students.

Right now, we can – and must – prioritize BIPOC student wellbeing.

Beginning this fall 2020 semester, Active Minds is calling on mental health advocates to help establish a campus culture of caring and support for BIPOC students nationwide.

CALL TO ACTION:

From now until November 15, partner with multicultural offices and student groups to advocate for at least one of the following changes on your campus:

  • In the Counseling Center: Advocate for investment in telehealth, drop-in counseling, and support groups.
  • In the Classroom: Ask educators to share mental health resources with their classes.
  • In Conversation: Advocate for cultural competency training for faculty and staff.
  • In the Strategic Plan: Advocate for mental health and equity or inclusion language in your institution’s strategic plan.
