Position Title: Manager, K-8 Engagement 
Status: Full Time
Location: Flexible, Washington, DC preferred


The Manager, K-8 will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to pilot, evaluate, and scale the Active Minds’ K-8 network with a focus on middle schools. Through dynamic and visionary leadership, the Manager, K-8 Engagement will lead Active Minds in developing and implementing student-led mental health education and programming and create adult stakeholder programs that address stigma and champion mental health advocacy in schools. This position will be part of the K-12 Initiatives team and will support Active Minds in redefining mental health in K-12 schools through supporting youth as they grow as mental health advocates in their schools and communities through Active Minds’ unique youth empowerment and peer-powered approach. 

The Manager, K-8 Engagement reports to the Director of K-12 Initiatives and supervises three Active Minds Fellows across three states. They will work collaboratively with the Active Minds Chapters and Higher Education teams, among other Active Minds staff members.

  • K-8 Mental Health Program Development: Tailor and expand Active Minds’ programming to K-8 schools, including expanding the Active Minds Chapter Network to middle schools and developing a peer-to-peer curriculum, with special emphasis supporting BIPOC and LGBTQ youth. Implement new strategies to facilitate K-8 support, education, and training.
  • K-8 Adult Stakeholder Relationship- and Partnership-Building: Develop an engagement strategy to help cultivate and strengthen relationships with key K-8 stakeholders, including district and school administrators, educators, and parents/caregivers to enhance awareness and impact of Active Minds and its programs. Ensure that all program-related key deliverables of the Active Minds strategic plan and grants are met or exceeded.
  • Training, Technical Assistance, and Communications: Develop and facilitate strategies such as trainings and technical assistance programs for students, educators, parents/caregivers, and school administrators. Work with the Communications and Marketing teams to design effective communications for K-8 students to maximize engagement and awareness. This includes content creation for email newsletters, development of email/Salesforce campaigns, and other strategies.
  • Staff Management: Manage the work of at least three Active Minds Fellows ensuring high-quality work and a positive professional development experience.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Support internal youth engagement strategies by working closely with colleagues to ensure that outreach, programs, content, and trainings are proactively anti-racist and inclusive of all both youth and adult audiences we seek to reach. They will also serve as an internal project manager across teams for projects that involve multiple departments.
  • Evaluation and Research: Work collaboratively with the Research and Evaluation Team to document and disseminate Active Minds’ impact through rigorous internal and external evaluation and research. The Manager will effectively track and report progress of all projects and deliverables.
  • Administration: Manage budgets; maintain and track organized records in the organization-wide CRM system, Salesforce; and participate in cross-department committees and initiatives.


The ideal candidate will have:

  • At least three years of demonstrated experience developing and maintaining K-8 school health programs with key K-8 stakeholders, including students, parents and caregivers, educators, school administrators, and community partners
  • Experience in program management ideally building and scaling programs
  • Strong background working in high-level (grades 5 – 8) K-8 schools with youth and adult stakeholders and developing mental health messaging, content, and programs
  • Knowledge of or experience in school health and wellness work
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to deliver effective presentations and trainings and write reports and business correspondence
  • Education in public health, health promotion, school health, public administration
  • Belief that equity and social justice are important and drive to hear, reflect, and act on this belief
  • Advocate for social entrepreneurship and a believer in young people making an impact

Minimum salary for this position is $60,000 and comes with a comprehensive benefits package that includes paid vacation and sick time; paid federal holidays; health, dental and vision coverage; and 401(k) matching. The starting pay for this position is equal to others at the same level throughout the organization. Candidates whose experience meets both the minimum and preferred qualifications may be considered for a starting salary that exceeds the current amount.
