Alyssa Milano Receives Hero Award From Active Minds

Washington, D.C. – Actor, producer, entrepreneur and activist, Alyssa Milano, was presented with the 2021 Active Minds Hero Award during the Active Minds National Conference. Active Minds, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization promoting mental health awareness and education for young adults, presents the Hero Award annually to recognize individuals who have gone out of their way to demonstrate compassion and leadership in promoting mental health in their community.

“Active Minds is proud to recognize Alyssa as a 2021 Active Minds Hero Award recipient. As an activist, Alyssa uses her platforms to speak up about the pressing issues of our time, including mental health. She is changing and normalizing the conversation on mental health every day by talking openly about her own mental health journey – from trauma, to finding the right therapist, to recovery – to let others who may be suffering know that they are not alone,” said Alison Malmon, founder and executive director of Active Minds.

Hero Award recipients use their platform to foster openness, transparency, and a culture of caring to help change the conversation around mental health.

Throughout her career, Alyssa has shined a spotlight on causes that matter deeply to her, including mental health, sexual harassment, and assault. Her advancement of #MeToo sparked a viral movement of women fighting against sexual harassment and assault. As a mental health advocate, Alyssa has helped to end the stigma around mental health by talking openly and honestly in interviews, in articles, and in her everyday life.

“Speaking out when so much can be on the line takes courage, it takes a hero. Change can only happen when we are able to have real conversations across platforms to break stigmas and stereotypes in the national conversation,” said Malmon.

Active Minds also awarded a 2021 Hero Award to Nkechi Okoro Carroll, executive producer of the popular Netflix drama, All American.
