Nkechi Okoro Carroll Receives Hero Award From Active Minds

Washington, D.C. – Nkechi Okoro Carroll, executive producer of the popular Netflix drama, All American, was presented with the 2021 Active Minds Hero Award during the Active Minds National Conference.  Active Minds, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization promoting mental health awareness and education for young adults, presents the Hero Award annually to recognize individuals who have gone out of their way to demonstrate compassion and leadership in promoting mental health in their community.

“Active Minds is proud to recognize Nkechi as a 2021 Active Minds Hero Award recipient. As a public figure, Nkechi is using her platform to change and normalize conversations on mental health, on what it means to be a young adult in today’s world, and on the real issues facing marginalized communities,” said Alison Malmon, founder and executive director of Active Minds.

Hero Award recipients use their platform to foster openness, transparency, and a culture of caring to help change the conversation around mental health.

As the executive producer of the popular Netflix series, All American, Nkechi uses her platform to tackle pressing issues facing young adults in an open, realistic way, opening the door to conversations about mental health, race, and stigma in our national conversation. Every decision that Nkechi makes, from focusing plotlines around mental health issues, or highlighting that mental health affects everyone, helps to end the stigma around mental health.

“As a producer for a major show, Nkechi has a unique opportunity to change the national conversation – and she is doing just that. It takes courage to advocate for story lines on stigmatized subjects, like mental health, and to continue to push for broad representation on a national level. It takes a hero,” said Malmon.

Active Minds also awarded a 2021 Hero Award to actor, producer, entrepreneur and activist, Alyssa Milano.
