What Are Chapters?

Active Minds Chapters are a network of 500+ peer-led mental health advocacy groups, focused on positive social change and a mentally healthier future in colleges and high schools across the United States.

Chapters are started and led by youth/young adults for youth/young adults, and are a consistent form of connection to peers, mental health as a movement, and to Active Minds itself. Chapters offer a sense of belonging and community while cultivating mental health changemakers within communities.

Each individual chapter is supported in deciding on how they want to mobilize and change the conversation about mental health at their school and in their communities through resource tabling, speaking opportunities, community-engagement events, and other action-oriented events.

Here are three primary ways our chapters are engaging in the work!

Launching a chapter is simple! Here’s what you need:

  • At least three students and one advisor (teacher, professor, counselor, or other full-time school staff member)
  • Complete your school’s process for starting a student organization and provide to Active Minds documentation of that approval, which can take the form of:
    • A letter or email from a Student Activities staff member or school administrator
    • Meeting minutes from a student government meeting where they acknowledge your chapter
    • Other official documentation
    • For High School chapters, this documentation can be a letter or email from your principal, vice-principal, or someone who manages student activities
  • Complete Active Minds Chapter Registration Form

How to Maintain your Active Minds Chapter Status

Our chapters are located at more than 500 schools throughout the United States. The network represents schools that are public, private, high schools, racial & equity focused, community colleges, technical institutions, and more.

  • Keep your contacts up-to-date! Use our Contact Update Form to keep the national office aware of who your current contacts are. Your chapter needs to have at least three Chapter Leaders (including Chapter Presidents) and at least one Advisor on file at all times.
  • Complete all Chapter Reports. Chapter Reports are quarterly check-in surveys to let us know what your chapter has been up to. These reports are sent out via email to Chapter Leaders and Advisors, so it’s crucial we have updated contact information on file.
  • Stay connected with the Chapters Team! We’re here to support you.
