Active Minds Announces its 300th Campus Chapter

As the fall 2010 semester comes to a close at colleges across the country, Active Minds is celebrating an historic milestone – its 300th campus chapter.

Active Minds at State University of New York at Oswego (SUNY Oswego) in Oswego, NY joins the Active Minds network as the organization expands to have a presence on 300 campuses nationwide.  SUNY Oswego is one of sixty-four campuses in the State University of New York system, and is home to more than 8,300 students.

The co-presidents and founders of Active Minds at SUNY Oswego, JoHanna Molascon and Alexa Martin are both honored to become a part of Active Minds. According to Martin, “I have had a burning desire inside of me for a while now to make a difference in this world on the topic of mental health.  I, along with everyone else have been surrounded by those suffering from mental health. The world needs to change its outlook and I am eager beyond belief to join this growing movement and spread the word to my fellow colleagues from SUNY Oswego.”

In 45 states plus the District of Columbia, Canada, and Australia, Active Minds serves as the largest resource for college students seeking to educate their peers about issues of mental health and mental illness.  The organization has engaged more than three thousand college student mental health advocates and has reached hundreds of thousands of students with educational and awareness-raising programming.  In the past seven years Active Minds has seen its number of chapters grow exponentially from one chapter at University of Pennsylvania to now 300 campuses across North America and in Australia.

“We’re particularly proud to be reaching this milestone,” said Alison Malmon, founder and executive director of Active Minds. “Early in Active Minds’ development we set out a goal of developing three hundred chapters by the end of 2010.  Now just weeks before years’ end, we have accomplished our goal and are so humbled by each and every individual’s commitment to our mission.”

To commemorate the 300th chapter, Active Minds is asking its supporters to change their profile picture on Facebook to reflect the milestone, tell 3 others about Active Minds and encourage them to fan the organization on Facebook, and share their experiences with the organization through posting short videos on the Active Minds Facebook page.

Plans are in place to continue to expand Active Minds’ presence at colleges and universities across the nation, and to provide innovative and effective programming to change the conversation about mental health on college campuses.
