Communications / Graphic Design

Tell us about a project you’re excited to work on this semester!

I am really excited about creating t-shirt designs for the merch store.

Why did you want to intern at Active Minds?

I am very passionate about the conversation of mental health, and very interested into transitioning into the graphics realm. So… perfect job.

What does Active Minds mean to you?

Active Minds to me, means challenging the way mental health is spoken about through university campuses.

Favorite DC spot?

Favorite way to unplug and re-charge:

Seeing some art or going out with friends.

 

Valeria Alvarado

Where do you go to school and what do you study?

I go to University of California, San Diego. I am majoring in Clinical Psychology and minoring in the study of religion.

Where is home to you?

I grew up in Central California in a small town called Kingsburg.

Tell us about a project you’re excited to work on this semester!

I am excited to learn more about Send Silence Packing and what I can do to contribute to this amazing display!

Why did you want to intern at Active Minds?

I was part of my school chapter for my freshman and sophomore year of college. Unfortunately, I could not continue my involvement because of my time commitment elsewhere, but I did pop in and out from time to time because I loved everything the organization stood for. I was so excited to hear that there was an opportunity to apply and intern for the national office in DC!

What does Active Minds mean to you?

To me Active Minds means finally talking about mental health. It means being able to talk about and take care of our mental health just like our physical health.

Why did you want to intern at Active Minds?

My own story with mental illness has made me eager to open up the conversation surrounding mental health stigma, especially in a time when we are seeing the conversation begin to change.

What does Active Minds mean to you?

Active Minds provides students with the education, support, and opportunity to end the stigma surrounding mental health.

The best foods can be found on a children’s menu.

Sofia Brunetti

Where do you go to school?

Where is home to you?

I grew up (and still am growing up) here around Washington, D.C.. However, home to me is not just here, it is also in Italy, where I spent some time abroad and where my family lives.

Which team are you interning for at Active Minds?

Why did you want to intern at Active Minds?

I started volunteering at Active Minds a few years ago when a high school student died by suicide, just a few blocks from my home. This was then followed by more suicides among students in the area. I wanted to do something to help and this is why I started to volunteer here; as I did, I became even more passionate about this topic. That was what drove me to be an intern (or rather to apply) at Active Minds.

What does Active Minds mean to you?

Giving hope to those who don’t think it’s there.

Favorite DC spot?

I love to walk around in Georgetown and along the waterfront.

spending time with my family and friends.

Happiness is a choice.

Favorite way to unplug and re-charge:

Working out, spending time outdoors and singing.

Why did you want to intern at Active Minds?

There’s not one workplace, campus space, or culture that can’t benefit from promotion of mental health and well-being– I wanted to be part of something powerful and beneficial.

Lilly Witte

Where do you go to school and what do you study?

I am a sophomore at the University of Notre Dame majoring in Anthropology with a focus in Public Health.

Where is home to you?

Home is my neighborhood of Price Hill in Cincinnati, Ohio; my family has lived in the same house my whole life.

Tell us about a project you’re excited to work on this semester!

I’m excited to help think of ideas of how to promote our top-performing chapters on our blog social media so other chapters can learn from them!

Why did you want to intern at Active Minds?

I wanted to be somewhere that I felt had personal meaning to me. As someone who not only has an interest in working in the mental health field in the future, but also has a background of mental illness, I knew that this organization would fit me well. I also love the culture of the people here; everyone is so kind and welcoming!

What does Active Minds mean to you?

Active Minds means creating a space where everyone can feel heard. It allows those who suffer silently to speak up and seek change within themselves.

Botanic Gardens

…dancing to 90s jams with my friends or taking a walk.

Your go-to motto or catchphrase?

Life is better when we are laughing.

Favorite way to unplug and re-charge:

I love drinking tea in a park or garden and just sitting. I also love having dinner with my roommates and talking about funny stories from the day!
